How will you quit this Stoptober? Posted on 26 Sep 2018

The Quit Squad are encouraging people who smoke to commit to the 28-day Stoptober challenge to help them quit using tobacco products rather than trying to go ‘cold turkey’.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health but many smokers who want to quit rely on willpower alone which is the least effective way to stop.

The Quit Squad want local smokers to boost their chance of success by getting face to face support and the most appropriate treatments.

If you live in Lancashire and are thinking of taking up the Stoptober challenge this year, why not come to see a Quit Squad advisor to plan your Stoptober quit. You are 4 times more likely to stop with specialist help than without.

Gareth Beck from the Quit Squad said:

“As a service we want to help as many people as possible stop smoking for good. Quit Squad are asking people, how will you quit this Stoptober? Evidence shows that you are 5 times more likely to quit if you complete the Stoptober challenge and can feel happier and more relaxed in the long term after stopping. Smoking is one of the biggest causes of illness and preventable death accounting for 80,000 deaths in England a year which is why it’s so important to encourage and support those who want to make a change and lead a healthier life.”

The benefits to quitting are endless from saving money to a better sense of smell and taste, breathing easier and protecting your family from the dangers of secondhand smoke. The 28-day challenge starts on Monday 1 October. For more information and to join the biggest stop smoking challenge of its kind, search “Stoptober” online and sign up. For local support contact the Quit Squad, telephone (Freephone) 0800 328 6297, or visit www.quitsquad.nhs.uk.

Around 152,320 people smoke across the Lancashire County Council footprint, which is almost 16% of adults in Lancashire

    • Children breathing in other people's cigarette smoke results in 300,000 GP visits and 9,500 hospital admissions for children every year.

    • In the North West, second hand smoke results in at least 34,000 GP consultations a year and over 1,100 hospital admissions.

    • More than 80% of second-hand smoke is invisible and odourless, and contains harmful cancer-causing toxins and poisons.

    • The only way to completely protect people from second-hand smoke is to make homes and cars entirely smoke free.
